Treating Acne with Vitamin B5
Panothenic acid, otherwise known as vitamin b5 is a vitamin that has been used successfully in high doses for treating acne. High doses of vitamin b5 creates high does of coenzyme-a which aids in the metabolism of fats. People with acne are lacking coenzyme-a; therefore, fats are deposited into your oil glands which creates in turn leads to acne. High amounts of vitamin b5 is needed in the treatment of acne. Lit-Hung Leung, M.D. suggests in his study that 10 grams is an optimal amount to help treat acne. Here is an outline of how vitamin b5 is typically suggested to be used in an acne regimen.
For the following regimen we are assuming the pantothenic acid (vitamin b5) pills are 500mg each.
The first three days you will want to start at a dosage of 5 grams per day. That is a total of 10 pills a day. 5 pills can be taken in the morning and 5 pills at night.
When the first three days are over you will be moving up to the full 10 gram dosage. You want to keep the levels of b5 stable in your bloodstream so it is reccommended to take 5 pills (2500mg) 4 times a day. It is very important to be as consistent as you can.
Keep taking the vitamin b5 for 3 months. Many people see results in the first or second week. Ideally your skin will be clear by the third month. Make sure to take the b5 consistently and EVERY DAY for the 3 month time span. (Note: Some people will experience an inital breakout, it is simply pre-existing pimples that are pushing through, stick with the regimen.)
After your acne is clear you will want to continue using vitamin b5 but at a lowered dose. Maybe drop it down to 5 grams a day. If your acne flares up again just increase the dosage back up to 10 grams until it subsides. Over time you can keep decreasing the dosage to the smallest dose that still helps keep acne away.
You will want to take a B complex vitamin during this acne regimen as well. Taking such high dosages of vitamin b5 may cause a deficiency of other b vitamins. 1-2 pills of B complex vitamin a day should suffice.
Vitamin b5 does not have many side effects. Here are some that users have reported:
-Frequent visits to the bathroom
-Stomach irritation
-Diarrhea
-Increased appetite
-Hairloss (rare) Some cases have been reported on message boards but this is not a common side effect at all.
-Chapped lips
Taking vitamin b5 with food can help reduce stomach related side effects.
Vitamin b5 is a water-soluble vitamin so it is nearly impossible to overdose on it. Some sites reccomend not to use it while pregnant or breast feeding.
