Eating Celery to Lower Blood Pressure

2009 July 22

Followers of Traditional Chinese Medicine have been using celery for a great while to reduce high blood pressure; furthermore, experimental evidence has shown that celery can help aid in reducing high blood pressure.  The active compound abundant in celery that helps reduce blood pressure is called 3-n-butylphthalide. The phthalide compound is known to relax the muscles in the arteries that regulate blood pressure.  Phthalide is also known to decrease stress hormones which are proven to increase blood pressure and cause blood vessels to constrict. It is highly suggested to eat no more than four celery stalks a day.  Celery does contain sodium and other compounds that can have negative effects when large amounts are ingested.

Eating celery is not a definitively proven method to reduce blood pressure but used in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle and well-balanced diet you can further determine how celery helps with your own blood pressure.
